Good to know

PNG or JPG: which one do you need?

  • A JFIF file is a JPEG with an unusual name. If a site only rejects the .jfif ending, the JFIF to JPG converter renames it without any change or quality loss, and the file stays small.
  • Choose PNG when an app or site asks for PNG, or when you will edit the picture many times: PNG saves never lose detail.
  • Expect the PNG to be several times bigger than the JFIF. In our tests photos were 5 to 6 times larger as PNG than as a quality-90 JPEG.
  • Converting does not add transparency or improve quality; the PNG holds exactly the pixels of the JPEG.

FAQ

Questions people ask first.

How do I convert JFIF to PNG?
Drop the .jfif files into the tool above and press Download. Each one is saved as a PNG with the same pixels; several files can be downloaded as one ZIP.
Does converting JFIF to PNG lose quality?
No. PNG is lossless, so the PNG keeps exactly the pixels decoded from the JFIF. It cannot undo compression the JFIF already has.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
JFIF (JPEG) throws away detail you would not notice; PNG keeps every pixel. Photos are typically 5 to 6 times larger as PNG.
How do I convert JFIF to PNG on Windows?
Open the file in Paint and choose File → Save as → PNG picture. For many files at once, this tool is quicker.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Your browser opens and converts the images on your own device. Nothing is sent to Daniotech or anyone else.
