How to

Make a photo black and white.

  1. 1Choose your photos, or drop them on the box.
  2. 2Pick Black and white (greyscale) for a classic photo look, or Pure black and white for two tones; move the threshold until the result is clean.
  3. 3Download each image, or Download all as a ZIP.

How it works

Brightness the way eyes see it.

Each pixel becomes the grey of its perceived brightness: 29.9% of the red, 58.7% of the green and 11.4% of the blue (the ITU-R BT.601 weights used for black and white TV and JPEG). Green looks brightest to us, so it counts most; a plain average of the three would make blue skies and red lips look wrong.

  • Pure black and white sets every pixel brighter than the threshold to white and the rest to black: ideal for documents, stamps and line art.
  • For a signature on paper, the signature resizer cleans the background and sizes it for forms in one go.
  • JPG files are saved as JPG (quality 92), WebP as WebP, and everything else as lossless PNG.
