Sizes inside the icon

How to

Make an .ico from a PNG.

  1. 1Choose a square PNG with a transparent background, ideally 256 × 256 px or larger. Other images work; non-square ones are centred.
  2. 2Tick the sizes to include. 16, 32 and 48 px cover favicons and Windows; add 256 for large desktop icons.
  3. 3Download the .ico. For a favicon, name it favicon.ico and put it in the root of your site.

Browsers request /favicon.ico on their own, so it is worth having even with PNG icons. The tool stores each size as PNG inside the .ico, which Windows Vista and later and every current browser read.

FAQ

Questions people ask first.

How do I convert PNG to ICO?
Open the PNG in the tool above, tick the sizes you want inside the icon, and download the .ico file. Transparency is kept.
What size should a favicon.ico be?
Include 16 × 16, 32 × 32 and 48 × 48 pixels in one file. Browsers pick the one they need. Larger sizes only make the file bigger for no gain in a tab.
Can one ICO file hold several sizes?
Yes; that is the point of the format. Each size is drawn separately from your PNG so small sizes stay as sharp as possible.
Does it work for Windows desktop icons?
Yes. Include 256 × 256 for large icon views; Windows shows the closest size it finds.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Your browser opens and converts the images on your own device. Nothing is sent to Daniotech or anyone else.
