AVIF to JPG converter

Settings

90 looks the same as the original for most photos. Lower makes a smaller file.
JPG has no transparency, so see-through parts are filled with this colour.

How to

Convert AVIF to JPG in three steps.

  1. 1Choose your .avif files, or drop them on the box.
  2. 2Keep quality 90 for a JPG that looks like the original, or lower it for a smaller file. Pick a background colour if the image has transparent parts.
  3. 3Download each JPG, or Download all to get one ZIP file.

Size

What to expect from the file size.

The same three photos, 1024 × 1024 pixels, saved four ways. AVIF is the smallest, which is why websites use it; JPG is the one everything opens.

Measured on 17 October 2026 with Pillow 11.3 (libjpeg-turbo, libavif) on three 1024 × 1024 product photos. Browsers use their own encoders, so your sizes will differ somewhat; Chrome’s PNGs, for example, come out larger than these.

If the JPG is too big for where it is going, run it through the 50KB compressor or the 20KB resizer, which also accept AVIF directly.

AVIF or JPG

When each format is the right one.

  • Keep AVIF for images on your own website: smaller files load faster, and every current browser shows them.
  • Convert to JPG to email a picture, print it, edit it in older software, or upload it to a form or service that accepts only JPG or PNG.
  • Convert to PNG instead if you will edit the image many times and want no further loss: save the JPG here, then use the JPG to PNG converter.
  • Animated AVIFs are saved as a single still frame, because JPG cannot hold animation.

FAQ

Questions people ask first.

How do I convert AVIF to JPG?
Open the AVIF file in the tool above, or drop several at once. Each one is saved as a JPG at quality 90, which you can change with the slider. Download the files one by one or as a ZIP. Nothing is installed and nothing is uploaded.
What is an AVIF file?
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is an image format from the Alliance for Open Media, released in 2019. It stores pictures using the AV1 video codec, so files are much smaller than JPG at the same look. Websites use it to load faster, which is why images you save from the web are often .avif.
Why is the JPG bigger than the AVIF?
Because AVIF compresses better. In our tests a JPG at quality 90 was about three times the size of an AVIF at quality 60 of the same photo (2.9 to 3.3 times). The picture does not get better; JPG simply needs more bytes to store it.
Do I lose quality converting AVIF to JPG?
A little, as with any JPG save. At quality 90 the difference is very hard to see. AVIF images with transparency get a solid background (white unless you pick another colour), and HDR AVIFs are converted to standard range, so very bright highlights can look flatter.
Why can’t I open AVIF files on my computer?
Older software does not read AVIF. Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (version 16 or newer) do, which is why this converter works in the browser. On a Mac with macOS 13 Ventura or newer, Preview can also open AVIF and export it as JPEG.
Can I convert many AVIF files at once?
Yes, up to 50 at a time. When more than one is ready, Download all saves them in one ZIP file with their original names and a .jpg extension.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Your browser decodes the AVIF and saves the JPG on your own device. Nothing is sent to Daniotech or anyone else.
